Legend:

still alive - Alive, or believed to be alive.
Green name - Tallest living person at one point from 1900 onwards.

A

Acromegaly - The primary effect of growth hormone excess in childhood is excessive growth, but the tallness is accompanied by a characteristic body build recognizable to an endocrinologist. The typical body build involves heavy, thick bones, with large hands and feet and a heavy jaw. Once puberty is complete and adult height is achieved, continued thickening of the skin and growth of the jaw results in a combination of features referred to as acromegaly.

Al G. Barnes Circus - Al G. Barnes Circus was an American circus run by Alpheus George Barnes Stonehouse. Stonehouse started the show in 1895 with a pony, a phonograph, a stereopticon. His circus was purchased by the American Circus Corporation in 1929 and was merged with the Sells-Floto Circus, John Robinson Shows, and Sparks Circus. That same year John Nicholas Ringling bought out the American Circus Corporation and folded all the performers into his Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Austin and Stone’s Dime Museum - Austin and Stone’s Dime Museum was an entertainment emporium located in Boston, Massachusetts, USA's famous Scollay Square (no.4 Tremont Row). It featured a freak show as well as dancing girls for entertainment. The freak show and other exhibits such as two-headed animals cost ten cents, while admission to the girlie show cost an additional dime.

Austin's Nickelodeon - The name "Nickelodeon" was first used in 1888 by Austin's Nickelodeon, a dime museum located in Boston, Massachusetts. One of their curiosities on exhibition was Col. Picket Nelson.

Average size man/woman/person - This is normally a very short man/woman/person who is pictured with a giant with the sole purpose to accentuate and exaggerate the giants height.

B

Barnum, Phineas Taylor - (5 July 1810 – 7 April 1891) was an American showman, businessman, and entertainer, remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and for founding the circus that became the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Barnum's American Museum - Barnum's American Museum was located at the corner of Broadway and Ann Street in New York City, USA, from 1841 to 1865. The museum was owned by famous showman P.T. Barnum and his partner and original owner, John Scudder. Prior to their partnership, the museum was known as Scudder's American Museum. The museum offered both strange, and educational attractions.

Barnum & Bailey Circus (The greatest show on earth) - In 1875, Dan Castello and William Cameron Coup persuaded Barnum to lend his name and financial backing to the circus they had already created in Delavan, Wisconsin. It was called "P.T. Barnum's Great Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, and Hippodrome". The moniker "Greatest show on Earth" was added later.

Big Top - The biggest tent in early-20th century circuses, where the circus itself took place.

Blowoff - The ten-in-one sideshow would often end in a "blowoff" or "ding," an extra act not advertised on the outside, which could be viewed for an additional fee.

C

Cabinet card - The Cabinet card was the style of photograph which was universally adopted for photographic portraiture in 1870. It consisted of a thin photograph that was generally mounted on cards measuring .25 by 6.5 inches.

Carte de visite - The carte de visite or CDV was a type of small photograph which was patented in Paris, France by photographer André Adolphe Eugčne Disdéri in 1854, although first used by Louis Dodero. It was usually made of an albumen print, which was a thin paper photograph mounted on a thicker paper card. The size of a carte de visite is 2.5 x 3.5 inches mounted on a card sized 2.5 x 4 inches.

Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus - The Clyde Beatty Circus was founded by Clyde Beatty (1903-1965), an animal trainer. He formed his own circus in 1945 after touring with several circuses including Hagenbeck-Wallace Cicus in his early career. Beatty toured his circus in conjunction with Russell Brothers Pan-Pacific Circus in 1946, then decided to open a show under his name only. In 1956, the circus was sold to the Acme Circus Corporation, and Beatty was hired as a star attraction. In 1957, the Acme Circus Corporation acquired the Cole Bros. Circus name and the show became Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus. Beatty remained the star of the show until his death in 1965.

D

Dime Museum - Dime museums were institutions that were briefly popular at the end of the 19th century in the United States. Designed as centers for entertainment and moral education for the working class (lowbrow), the museums were distinctly different from upper-middle class' cultural events (highbrow). In urban centers like New York City, where many immigrants settled, dime museums were popular and cheap entertainment. The social trend reached its peak during the Progressive era (1865–1920).

E

Eisenmann, Charles - Charles Eisenmann was an American photographer. His work, which dates from the Victorian-era "Gilded Age" (1870-1890), focused almost exclusively on the "freaks" of the circuses, sideshows, and living museums of New York's Bowery area. The subject matter was profitable enough to provide a living for both Eisenmann and Frank Wendt, his successor in the business. His subjects came from many countries and covered the entire spectrum of human oddity: giants and midgets, fat ladies and human skeletons, snake charmers and wild men, ladies bearded and tattooed, and a menagerie of turtle boys, dog boys, lobster boys, lion boys and more. Notable figures who sat for his portraits include Myrtle Corbin (four-legged lady), Jo Jo the dog-faced boy, Admiral Dot (midget), Zip the Pinhead, P.T. Barnum and many giants.

Endocrine system - In physiology, the endocrine system is a system of glands, each of which secretes a type of hormone directly into the bloodstream to regulate the body. Hormones regulate various human functions, including Metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, and mood. The field of study dealing with the endocrine system and its disorders is endocrinology, a branch of internal medicine.

Endocrinology - Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions called hormones, the integration of developmental events such as proliferation, growth, and differentiation (including histogenesis and organogenesis) and the coordination of metabolism, respiration, excretion, movement, reproduction, and sensory perception depend on chemical cues, substances synthesized and secreted by specialized cells.

Eunuchoidal-infantile gigantism - A very rare but more extreme version of "eunuchoid" tallness is called eunuchoidal-infantile gigantism and occurs when a mutation of the estrogen receptor reduces the response of the bones to estradiol. Estradiol is a byproduct of testosterone in both males and females and is the most potent accelerator of bone maturation and closure known. If a person fails to respond to estrogen, growth can continue until late 20's or longer, and the affected person can reach 8 feet or more in height. Estrogen resistance is the only other endocrine condition that can rival growth hormone excess in producing gigantism. Eunuchoidal-infantile gigantism is more commonly known as daddy-longlegs syndrome. In contrast, the tallness associated with the more common androgen insensitivity syndrome averages only a few inches.

F

Forepaugh, Adam - Adam Forepaugh (28 February 1831 - 20 January 1890) was an American entrepreneur, businessman, and circus owner. He owned and operated a circus from 1865 through 1890 under various names including Forepaugh's Circus, The Great Forepaugh Show, The Adam Forepaugh Circus, and Forepaugh & The Wild West.

G

Gigantism - Gigantism (from Greek gigas, gigantos "giant") is a condition characterized by excessive height growth. Gigantism (or giantism) is not a currently used medical term and there is no precise definition of the degree of tallness which qualifies a person to be termed a "giant". On TheTallestMan.com we use a height of 7 feet 2 inches (218.4 cm) or more.

H

Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus - The Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus was a circus that traveled across America in the early part of the 20th century. At its peak, it was the second-largest circus in America next to Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. It was based in Peru, Indiana.

Humberd, Dr. Charles D. - Dr. Charles D. Humberd (Barnard, Missouri) was the coroner of Nodoway County, who's hobby was giantism. He owned the skeletal remains of John Aasen and Paul Herold. Humberd was sued by Robert Wadlow and the case went to court in March 1939. He was friendly with at least 17 giants, including Jack Earle, Rayford Johnson and Henry Mullens. He was also a collector of dime novels.

Marfan syndrome - Marfan syndrome is an uncommon genetic disease due to an inherited defect of connective tissue. In addition to moderate tallness, persons with this condition usually have a slender body build with unusually long fingers (arachnodactyly). Many can also develop a dislocaton of the lens of the eye or, more seriously, a progressive deterioration of the walls of the aorta which can result in sudden death in adulthood. It is usually inherited as an autosomal dominant trait.

N

Nickelodeon - The Nickelodeon (Nickel = 5 cent coin, Greek: Odeion = roofed over theatre) was a multi-purpose theater that was popular from about 1900 to 1914. Usually situated in converted storefronts, the Nickelodeon featured motion pictures, illustrated songs, slide shows and lectures. Nickelodeons were one of the two main exhibition venues for motion pictures, apart from Vaudeville theaters. Nickelodeons declined with the advent of the feature film, and as cities grew and industry consolidation led to larger, more comfortable, and better-appointed movie theaters. The name "Nickelodeon" was first used in 1888 by Austin's Nickelodeon, a dime museum located in Boston, Massachusetts.

Pituitary gigantism - Pituitary gigantism due to growth hormone excess is the single condition which accounts for nearly all cases of pathologic extreme height. The excess growth hormone usually results from oversecretion by a group of somatotrope cells of the anterior pituitary gland (termed a "somatotrope adenoma"). These cells do not respond to normal controls of growth or function. They grow very slowly, so that for many years the only effects of such an adenoma are the effects of excessive growth hormone.

Pituitary gland - In vertebrate anatomy the pituitary gland, or hypophysis, is an endocrine gland about the size of a pea and weighing 0.5 g (0.02 oz.), in humans. It is a protrusion off the bottom of the hypothalamus at the base of the brain, and rests in a small, bony cavity (sella turcica) covered by a dural fold (diaphragma sellae). The pituitary is functionally connected to the hypothalamus by the median eminence via a small tube called the infundibular stem (Pituitary Stalk). The pituitary fossa, in which the pituitary gland sits, is situated in the sphenoid bone in the middle cranial fossa at the base of the brain. The pituitary gland secretes nine hormones that regulate homeostasis.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus - Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is an American circus company. The company was started when the circus created by James Anthony Bailey and P. T. Barnum was merged with the Ringling Brothers Circus. The Ringling brothers purchased the Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1907, but ran the circuses separately until they were finally merged in 1919.

S

Sells Brothers Circus - Sells Brothers Circus was started by Lewis Sells and Peter Sells. It ran from 1862 to 1863 and again from 1871 to 1895. It merged with the circus operated by Adam Forepaugh to form the Forepaugh-Sells Brothers' Circus in 1900. It later merged with the Floto Dog & Pony Show into Sells Floto Circus.

Sells Floto Circus - The Sells Floto Circus was a combination of the Floto Dog & Pony Show and the Sells Brothers Circus that toured with sideshow acts in the United States during the early 1900s.

Sideshow - A sideshow is an extra, secondary production associated with a circus, carnival, fair or other such attraction.

Sotos syndrome - Sotos syndrome resembles acromegaly in its mild distortion of facial growth. In addition to tallness, the chief characteristics are large head size, below average intelligence, and autosomal dominant inheritance.

T

Ten-in-One - The "Ten-in-One" is a sideshow which offers a program of ten sequential acts under one tent for a single admission price. The ten-in-one might be partly a freak show exhibiting "human oddities" (including "born freaks" such as midgets, giants or persons with other deformities, or "made freaks" like tattooed people, fat people or "human skeletons"- extremely thin men often "married" to the fat lady, like Isaac W. Sprague). However, for variety's sake, the acts in a ten-in-one would also include "working acts" who would perform magic tricks or daredevil stunts. In addition, the freak show performers might also perform acts or stunts, and would often sell souvenirs like "giant's rings" or "pitch cards" with their photos and life stories.

Vaudeville - Vaudeville was a theatrical genre of variety entertainment in the United States and Canada from the early 1880s until the early 1930s. Each performance was made up of a series of separate, unrelated acts grouped together on a common bill. Types of acts included popular and classical musicians, dancers, comedians, trained animals, magicians, female and male impersonators, acrobats, illustrated songs, jugglers, one-act plays or scenes from plays, athletes, lecturing celebrities, minstrels, and movies. Vaudeville developed from many sources, including the concert saloon, minstrelsy, freak shows, dime museums, and literary burlesque. Called "the heart of American show business," vaudeville was one of the most popular types of entertainment in North America for several decades.

W

Wendt, Frank - Frank Wendt was an American photographer who took over the Eisenmann studio on the Bowery in 1893 and ran it for five years before moving it to New Jersey.
